If you are even a little into politics, Navjot Singh Sidhu is the name you might have constantly heard in the last few years. Navjot Singh Sidhu was a cricketer. After his career in cricket, he decided to become a politician and joined initially. He then later shifted to Congress a few years later.  He is always in the news for different reasons.

He is now again in big trouble over a 34 year old road rage case. Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on 19th May was sentenced by the Supreme Court to one year in jail in a 34-year-old road rage case. Sidhu must surrender and serve a year's "rigorous imprisonment", the court said.

On December 27, 1988, Sidhu got into an argument with Gurnam Singh, a resident of Patiala, over a parking spot. Sidhu and his friend, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, allegedly dragged Gurnam Singh out of his car and hit him after which he later died in hospital. In 1999, a sessions court in Patiala acquitted (freed) Sidhu because of lack of evidence and gave him the benefit of the doubt. This decision was challenged in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The high court then convicted Sidhu in 2006 and sentenced him to three years in jail. In 2018, Sidhu approached the Supreme Court, which said the case was over 30 years old and Sidhu had not used a weapon. Sidhu was only held guilty of assaulting a senior citizen, and the court just imposed a fine of ? 1,000 on him. The Supreme Court also acquitted Sidhu's friend of all charges, saying there was no proper evidence that he was present at the spot. However, quite recently, the family of the victim, Gurnam Singh, requested the Supreme Court to review its order and consider tougher punishments, responding to which the Supreme Court has finally punished him with 1 year jail.
