Mumbai: Massive Accident Caught on Camera Kills Five

In an extremely heart wrenching incident, five people were killed and eight were injured at a crash site on the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai.

In an extremely heart wrenching incident, five people were killed and 13 were injured after a speeding car rammed into three cars and an ambulance at a crash site on the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai late night. The horrific crash, which took place at around 3 am on Wednesday, 5th of October, was recorded by CCTV cameras. After a few hours of the crash of which the video went viral, the police revealed the series of incidents which led to this fatal accident. According to the police, at around 2:40 am, the front tyre on the left side of a Swift car suddenly burst due to which the driver of that vehicle lost control and hit the railing on the sea link. One of the guards posted on the sea link, identified as Rajendra Singh, informed the toll plaza about the accident. A six-member team comprising toll plaza employees, ambulance driver, the driver of the towing vehicle, left for the spot.

The drivers of the towing van and the ambulance parked their respective vehicles ahead of the Swift, following which they went to help the injured. Subsequently, two vehicles, a Baleno and a Mercedes, stopped ahead of these vehicles to help them. Two doctors working in the defence were travelling in a Mercedes; they believed that someone had gotten injured due to which they stopped. The ambulance was preparing to take the victims of the accident to a hospital when the second crash took place. The CCTV footage appears to show one person trying to divert traffic. He jumps out of the range of the speeding car at the last moment. Minutes later, a speeding Creta, an SUV, rammed the Swift car from behind.  The impact was so huge that it went and rammed into the ambulance, which hit the vehicles that were parked ahead of it. The police control room was then informed.

Five were declared dead during treatment.36-year-old Chetan Kadam,  who was in the team of toll employees who reached the accident spot, died in the crash. He specialised in distracting people who wanted to commit suicide by jumping off the sea link and had been awarded for the same. He was also a professional in removing accident victims from mangled cars and getting them admitted to hospitals. 3 other toll employees and the ambulance driver too died in the crash. 13 people were injured and are being treated in different hospitals. Two others were allowed to go after being treated for minor injuries. Irfan Abdul Raheem Beelkia, who was driving the Creta, is a real estate developer, has been arrested. After the video of the accident surfaced on the internet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
