The police have registered an FIR and sent Arshad's body to Sion Hospital for a postmortem. CCTV footage revealed that the murder took place in Gulalwadi, so the case was handed to the Pydhonie police.
The CCTV footage showed Arshad entering a building in Gulalwadi around 7:30 PM. It was later discovered that Arshad, Jay, and Shivjit had consumed alcohol, and during an altercation, Jay and Shivjit murdered Arshad with a hammer and stuffed his body into a red bag.
The duo then traveled to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and boarded a train to Dadar with the intention of disposing of the body on the Tutari Express. A video from the CCTV footage at the railway station shows the accused pulling the heavy bag.
During police interrogation, Jay and Shivjit gave conflicting statements and were uncooperative. Jay claimed Arshad had objectionable photos and videos of his girlfriend, while Shivjit said Arshad owed him money.
The police stated that all three, including the victim and the accused, were childhood friends. They attended the same Deaf school, played cricket together, and often drank together after work.
Adding to the mystery, a video emerged showing a foreigner named "Jazzy B" watching the live murder on his phone during a video call with an unidentified person. The 7.12-minute video, which shows Singh attacking Arshad with a hammer and broken beer bottles, was also posted in a WhatsApp group of Deaf people.
The police are investigating Jay's role further as he was not seen in the viral video but was caught with the body. Interpreters are helping the police understand the motive and the foreigner’s involvement
Arshad lived with his wife, Rukshana, and their two daughters, aged 10 and 8. Rukshana recounted that Arshad left home on Sunday evening to meet a friend who was supposedly giving him an iPhone from America. Later that night, the police informed her that Arshad had been in an accident. When they reached the hospital, they found out he had been murdered.
Rukshana, also Deaf, shared through her daughter, "My husband's friends showed us a video of his murder. I gave the video to the police. I am sure the accused gave him some mixed intoxicating drink and then killed him. I want justice, and the third accused seen in the video call should be arrested."
Arshad's brother, Ashraf, demanded justice for his brother's brutal murder.
The police produced both accused in court, and they were remanded in police custody until 12th August 2024. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are gathering evidence to determine the motive behind the crime.
