Mumbai: Deaf Man Dies In Tree Falling Incident

Two persons including a Deaf person died and one was severely injured in separate incidents of tree falling in Mumbai.

As the rain wreaked havoc across Mumbai city two persons died and one was severely injured in separate incidents of tree fall in Mumbai amid heavy rain.  The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded 22 incidents of tree falling in Mumbai between 8 am and 6 pm on 28th June 2023.

In Ulhasnagar an auto rickshaw driver suffered severe head injuries when a tree fell on his autorickshaw. 4 school children travelling the autorickshaw were pulled out safely by passersby. The driver was admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, in Goregaon a 30 year old man was crushed to death by a dead coconut tree that fell during the incessant rain. The man was running a laundry business from a makeshift shed under the tree.

In very sad news for the Deaf community, on 28th June 2023 when heavy rain battered Mumbai suburbs a dead peepal tree fell at a chawl compound in Malad, injuring Kaushal Doshi, 38, a Deaf man. It is being reported that Doshi shifted to the area 6 months back as his building had gone under redevelopment.  Doshi went to the public toilet at midnight and didn’t return. In the morning, members of his family started looking for him. A neighbour said, “I stepped out and saw a fallen tree in the compound. I tried to move a branch to reach the gate and saw a hand. I informed others and the man was identified as Kaushal.  Doshi was taken to the BMC-run Shatabdi Hospital where he was declared dead. A cousin of Doshi said that since Doshi was Deaf, he couldn’t call out for help and that led to delay in his rescue. A fire Brigade official said that the peepal tree was almost entirely decayed and must have fallen due to heavy rain and strong winds. Kaushal was an amazing cricketer and won several trophies and medals. Everyone knew him. It is heartbreaking that our Deaf friend is gone. He was cremated thereafter.
