Mumbai : 11 Dead After One Building Falls on Another

At least 11 people, out of which eight were children, were killed and seven injured after a double-storey structure collapsed on another in a slum at Malwani, Malad (West).

Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past two days. On Wednesday 9th June, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an 'Orange' alert in the Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane districts of Maharashtra for the next four days. Orange alert is just below Red alert. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) disaster management cell, at 11.10 am at the Malwani Slum Area in Malad (W), at least 11 people were killed and seven injured after a double-storey structure collapsed on another building next to it. The incident took place after Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall throughout the day.

The local Malwani police and fire brigade officials are at the spot, carrying out rescue operations. Locals joined the search team and helped rescue the injured and transported them to a hospital in suburban Kandivali. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prabhat Rahangdale of BMC said, “Three persons are still suspected to be trapped and the search operation is on to find them.” More details awaited. The BMC has also evacuated people from a nearby 3-storey building, as it was in a highly dilapidated condition.
