Mukesh Ambani- Asia’s Biggest Mango Farmer?

We have often heard about Mukesh Ambani as India’s biggest industralist, but what if we tell you that he is Asia’s largest exporter of mangoes too?- Watch full story

What if I tell you that Mukesh Ambani is a farmer too? You’ll probably laugh at this right, well actually he is. Well actually Smartness is in turning your weaknesses into strengths, and that is what Mukesh Ambani is best at. Many of you might be knowing that Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited is into clothes, food, electricity, their company Jio offers internet, SIM cards, telephones etc. Now the company also owns the largest farms of mangoes in Asia. The story of Reliance and the mangoes dates back to the late nineties. In the year 1997, the company was  concerned of huge pollution being caused at its petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat. After receiving several warnings from the Pollution Control Boards, Reliance realized that something needed to be figured out to solve that problem. It’s only then that Reliance introduced the idea of creating a mango farm near the refinery to control the pollution levels. The wastelands near the Jamnagar refinery of Reliance were then converted into a green belt, and around 1.3 lakh plants of mangoes of over 127 species were planted there. The trees were grown on 600 acres of land.

The water for the trees comes from the company’s factory that purifies the seawater and converts it into fresh water which is suitable for drinking and farming as well. As the orchard’s area is large and there are issues of less water and no rainfall, so to cope with it, appropriate technologies like Rain water harvesting where Rainwater is stored and is later used for agriculture is used. Every year, Ambani’s massive 600 acres mango farm produces about 127 varieties of mangoes of excellent quality which are sold locally as well as exported internationally.

Reliance encourages farmers to visit its mango farms and learn from the modern and innovative methods being used there. It also distributes 1 lakh free saplings (small and tiny plants which are used for plantation) to farmers every year. Also the same trees help to absorb the pollution and harmful gasses and thus saves the environment. The company has found a way to save the environment and makes a lot of money by selling mangoes! Now that is a smart businessman!
