Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case: Sonam Raghuvanshi Granted Bail

A year after the Meghalaya honeymoon murder, the accused Sonam Raghuvanshi has been granted bail over procedural lapses, but the trial and family dispute continue.

The Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, which shocked the nation in 2025, has taken another dramatic turn.

In May 2025, newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. Days later, Raja was found dead in a gorge near Sohra, while police alleged that Sonam, her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, and others had conspired to murder him. Sonam was later arrested, and a 790-page chargesheet named eight accused.

Now, in a major development, Sonam was granted bail on 29 April 2026 after her fourth application. The court clarified that bail was not granted because she was innocent, but due to procedural lapses in her arrest, including issues with documentation and communication of arrest grounds.

The murder case remains active, and Sonam must stay in Shillong, cooperate with authorities, and attend court hearings.

Breaking her silence for the first time, Sonam told EastMojo on 13 June 2026 that she is following all bail conditions and intends to remain in Shillong until the case concludes. She also dismissed rumours that she had fled to Nepal.

Meanwhile, the families remain deeply divided. Sonam's brother Govind has publicly sided with Raja's family and refused to support her legally, while her father continues to maintain her innocence and has demanded a CBI inquiry.

Raja's family has expressed shock over the bail order and is also seeking a CBI investigation. As the legal battle continues, Meghalaya Police say the investigation and trial will proceed according to law.
