Manipur Film-Maker Returns His Padma Shri Award

Film-Maker Aribam Syam Sharma returns his Padma Shri to protest the Citizenship [Amendment] Bill, 2016.

The Padma Shri is one of the highest awards given to the citizens by the Indian government. In 2006, Aribam Syam Sharma a film-maker and music composer from Manipur, was awarded the Padma Shri. Aribam Syam Sharma is a film-maker and music composer from manipur.

He has decided to return his award to protest the Citizenship [Amendment] Bill of 2016. This Bill, provides citizenship to refugees and immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who came to India before 31st December 2014. Residents of the northeastern states of Manipur, Meghalaya and Assam are not happy with this law. They have been protesting the law for many days now.

Mr Aribam Syam Sharma said that government does not care about what the people want. He said it would be wrong if he accepted the award from such a government. Mr. Sharma has won many National Awards in the past. He is famous for transforming the world of cinema in Manipur in the 1970s.
