Man Attacked by Lion at Alipore Zoo in Kolkata
A man was seriously injured after being attacked by a lion when he entered the animal's enclosure at the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata.
In Alipore Zoo in Kolkata, on 19th March, at around 11:30 am a man named Gautam Guchait bought a ticket and entered the zoo. He was dressed as a Hindu Priest. After walking for a bit, he then came to the lion enclosure. The man somehow climbed the boundary wall and then jumped over the two netted boundaries. At that time, the lion was out of its cage. When the lion saw the man, the lion aggressively attacked the man. Visitors then quickly informed the Zoo security guards, who reached the spot immediately. They saw that the man had been dangerously injured on his neck and shoulder. The guards somehow managed to rescue the man.
Zoo authorities rushed the man to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata and informed the local police as well. Authorities say the man was drunk and mentally unstable. The man is very critical. Police officials are now checking CCTV footage to understand what exactly happened.
A similar incident was earlier reported from Kerala in 2018. A shocking mobile phone video went viral which showed a man jump into an open enclosure housing lions at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo. However, he was overpowered by security officials who dragged him away to safety. In Hyderabad, a 35-year-old man, who jumped into a lion's enclosure at Nehru Zoological Park in 2016 was sentenced to four months imprisonment by a local court. He was also drunk at the time of incident, officials said. In January 2019, a 30-year old man was attacked and killed by two lions at the Chhatbir Zoo in Mohali, Punjab after he scaled an over-25-feet high wall.
