Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar Renamed As Ahilyanagar
Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra has been renamed Ahilyanagar in honour of 18th-century Maratha ruler Ahilyabai Holkar.
On 5th October 2024, Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra was officially renamed as Ahilyanagar by the Maharashtra state government. The renaming honors the 18th-century Maratha ruler, Ahilyabai Holkar, who was known for her strong leadership and contributions to Indian architecture, trade, and charity.
The decision to rename the district was made by the Maharashtra state cabinet in March 2024 and sent to the central government for approval. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Ministry of Railways had no objection to the new name. The official approval was granted by the central government on 4th October 2024.
Ahilyabai Holkar was born in Chandi village, present-day Ahmednagar, and later became the queen of Malwa (Indore). She took over the kingdom after her husband, Khanderao Holkar, and her son Male Rao Holkar died. Ahilyabai is remembered for her bravery, strong administration, and contributions to building temples, ghats, and educational institutions.
Maharashtra's Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil expressed his joy over the decision, calling it a "historic event" as it coincides with the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai. He, along with Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, thanked Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their cooperation in renaming the district.
Ahilyabai’s legacy continues to inspire, and the renaming of Ahmednagar to Ahilyanagar is a tribute to her remarkable contributions.
