In a first in Punjab, the Ludhiana police on Sunday launched a free-ride scheme.

Under this scheme, if any woman is alone and unable to find a ride home, she will be dropped home by a police vehicle for free. Women can call police helpline numbers and request for a vehicle. The women will then be dropped at their destinations by nearby Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle or Station House Officer (SHO) vehicles. This free service will be available from 10 pm to 6 am on all days.

Rakesh Agrawal, Commissioner of Police of Ludhiana said that, “We have started many programs to ensure the safety and security of women in Ludhiana. We have two helpline numbers — ‘1091’ and ‘7837018555’ — for this. These numbers work 24×7. Women can dial these to get a free ride to their home.

The helpline numbers can also be used by students if they are facing any problems in school and for counselling of school students as well. Mr Aggarwal said that they launched the Shakti App. If a woman is in danger and she clicks the ‘SOS’ button on the App the nearest police station will be given her location. Also 10 of her contacts will be alerted about her location as well. This will make sure she can be reduced in time. More than 2,500 women are using the App in Ludhiana.
