The Lok Sabha passed the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill. Watch the video for all the details.

The SPG Act which stands for Special Protection Group, is a law that governs a special security group for providing security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Ministers of India. Even members of their families are given security protection wherever they are in the world. On Wednesday 27th November, the Lok Sabha passed the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill.

This law now has a few changes. The SPG will now protect the Prime Minister and members of his family staying with him at his official residence. It will also provide security to former Prime Ministers and their immediate family members staying with them at their house. But this will only be for a period of five years from the date on which they resign. When this Law was passed in the Lok Sabha, the Congress became angry and walked out.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury responded in the Lok Sabha and said that this is Political vendetta. He said the BJP wanted this Bill because they do not want to give security protection to the Gandhi Family. In return Amit Shah said that yes changes to the SPG Act were made because of the Gandhi family. Gandhi family members have taken several trips without informing. They have travelled without the SPG group 600 times. He said they will receive top security by the government. SPG is not just about "physical protection" but includes the Prime Minister's office, his health and also, his communications.
