Lindsay Clancy Trial: Did Mental Illness Make Her Kill Her Three Children?

The trial of former nurse Lindsay Clancy focuses on the killing of her three children and whether severe postpartum psychosis made her unable to understand her actions.

Lindsay Clancy, a former labour-and-delivery nurse from Massachusetts, USA, is on trial for the deaths of her three children: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months old.

The incident happened on 24 January 2023 at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. After her husband Patrick Clancy left to get food and medicine, Lindsay killed the three children. She then jumped from a second-floor window in an apparent suicide attempt. She survived but suffered serious spinal injuries and is now paralysed.

The main question in the trial is not whether Lindsay killed the children. Both sides agree that she did. The question is whether she was mentally capable of understanding what she was doing and that it was wrong.

The defence says Lindsay was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, a rare mental-health condition that can cause hallucinations, delusions, confusion and disturbed thinking. They say her mental health had become worse after childbirth despite treatment and medication.

The prosecution, however, says the killings were planned and that Lindsay understood her actions. Prosecutors have pointed to her phone activity and other evidence to argue that she was aware of what she was doing.

The trial began in July 2026 at Plymouth Superior Court. More than 80 witnesses have testified, including doctors, mental-health experts, family members and first responders. The jury has also heard Patrick’s emotional testimony and seen phone records and other evidence.

After four days of deliberation, the jury told the judge on 1 September that it could not reach a unanimous decision. The judge asked them to continue deliberating. If they still cannot agree, the judge could declare a mistrial, which may lead to another trial with a new jury.
