Lesbian Police Couple Want Protection From Family

A lesbian couple from Gujarat have filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking protection from their families.

There were two female police constables named Manisha aged 24 from village in Botad, Gujarat and Bhavna aged 24 from Dahod, Gujarat. Four years back, the two had applied for police recruitment. They were posted as constables in a police station in Mahisagar district. The two fell in love with each other three years ago.

On 15th June, the two women sent an application to the inspector of Santrampur Police Station in Mahisagar asking for protection. For five days they did not get a reply so they wrote another application to the Superintendent of Police. The couple had written, “We both are women and take care of ourselves. We have decided to live together for the rest of our entire lives. We have been in love for the past 3 years. We want to live under one roof. Therefore, we have entered a live-in relationship contract. This has made our family members angry with us. We fear threat to our lives from both families. Manisha’s family frequently comes here and threatens to take her home forcefully. Our family members may even kill us. So, we need protection.”
When they did not get any reply to their application, they approached the Gujarat High Court for protection. The HC then directed the police to provide immediate protection to the couple. Their parents also approached Mahisagar police seeking action. But police officials said, “Manisha’s father moved a plea but we informed them that we cannot take action as the two are adults and can live as they want.”
