Filmmaker Karan Johar's Dharma Productions was criticized by environmental activists for dumping tons of waste in the Nerul Village in Goa after finishing the shoot for an untitled film starring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ananya Pandey. This month the crew of the film had littered the village with a huge load of biomedical waste including used PPE kits, face protectors, sanitary napkins, plastic of all kinds, and other waste. The local people were outraged over the foul-smelling and rotting garbage, and they started circulating pictures and videos of it on social media. The Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) came to know about the issue after Lokhancho Ekvott Goa, a group to save Goan heritage, complained. ESG issued a show-cause notice to the production house on 25th October
Flynn Remedios, their spokesperson of Lokhancho Ekvott Goa said that they would approach the Court soon against Dharma for breaking the laws and not even saying sorry. He added, “If they do not apologize, the garbage would be parceled to Karan Johar’s house and Dharma's office. Directorate of Health Services, all medical gear must be disposed of using incinerators. The waste should not be dumped but sent to such a facility. Goa's Health Minister, Vishwajit Rane, said, “When permission was given for the film shoot, rules should be added in guidelines that the waste will be disposed off by the film production company.”Goan actor Poonam Karekar Govekar said it was shameful and added, “I am surprised that the national media in India has not covered this news. Would Karan Johar's production do this in any city? Would he dump such huge amounts of garbage and hazardous bio-medical waste by the roadside in London or Dubai or even in Mumbai?”
