Kangana Ranaut: “India’s 1947 Freedom Was Bheek”

Kangana Ranaut stated that the independence in 1947 was given to Congress as bheek (alms). Real freedom was in 2014.

Actress Kangana Ranuat attended theTimes Now Summit on 10th November. The actress talked in length about cinema, politics and many more topics. However, one of her remarks landed her in controversy.

Kangana said that India got freedom in 1947. But that was not real freedom.Britishers were ruling India. India was fighting for freedom. They knew that if India is not given freedom they will fight more. The British were aware that blood will flow. It should not be their blood. They then decide to leave India and give it in the hands of Congress as bheek. She added that the Congress was not better than the British. They were also like the British and they controlled the country the same way as the British did. The country from 1947 to 2014 was suffering the same as they did in British time. In 2014, India got real independence.By this she meant that the BJP came into power and removed the Congress. This is like independence. She also said that the history taught in schools does not teach a lot about Veer Savarkar who was a very strong freedom fighter. Similarly like him, there are many freedom fighters whose stories are not taught to us. Her comments spiralled into a major controversy.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Preethi Menon has filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police seeking an FIR against Kangana.

In a tweet, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Varun Gandhi criticized Ranaut for insulting the sacrifices made by India's freedom fighters. He said that Sometimes, she insults Mahatma Gandhi and respects his killer. And now she is disrespecting the sacrifices of Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and lakhs of freedom fighters. Her comments are like "madness" or "treason."?. Ranaut is banned from Twitter. So she smartly responded to Gandhi's criticism on Instagram. She said that I respect the 1857 freedom fight by Mangal Pandey. It was the first fight for freedom. But after that the Brisitshers tortured the Indians more. Almost after 100 years, the British gave freedom as we were begging for it. They knew that we would suffer the same at the hands of Congress.

The All India Mahila Congress too has written to the President demanding the recall of her Padma Shri with which was recently conferred to her.

CORRECTION: The name of the 1857 freedom fighter is Mangal Pandey.
