After Mamata Banerjee’s TMC won the State Assembly Elections in West Bengal, violence has erupted in the state. Images and clips of alleged murders, fires, and ransacking of houses and BJP offices have gone viral on social media. The BJP claimed that two of its workers were allegedly gang-raped by members of the TMC. The West Bengal police, however, have in a tweet dismissed the claims of ‘gang-rapes’ as being ‘fake’. Around 14 people have been killed in the violence. The TMC & the BJP are blaming each other for the violence. Mamata Banerjee held an emergency meeting on Tuesday 4th May with top state officials and told them to immediately stop the violence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to talk to him about the situation in West Bengal. Modi has asked the west bengal home ministry for a detailed report over the incident.
Reacting to the situation in West Bengal actress Kangana Ranaut posted a video on Twitter. In the video she was teary eyed and said, “I am heartbroken over the violence that is happening in West Bengal. This is the death of democracy and I have no words to express my feelings. Women are getting gangraped, the BJP offices are being vandalised, BJP supporters are being killed and I am very upset by this.
During the 2002 Gujarat riots between Hindus & Muslims, PM Modi was the Chief Minister. He was so strong and he stopped the riots. I want Modi to do the same in Bengal right now as the situation is horrible. I request PM Modi to put President’s rule in West Bengal and "tame" Mamata Banerjee.” Because of this video, Twitter has permanently suspended Kangana’s account.
A Twitter spokesperson said, “Harassing a person, or inciting other people to do so, threatening them or silencing someone else's voice is completely against Twitter’s policy. Kangana’s account has clearly broken these rules and she has done this repeatedly in the past as well. We will not tolerate the breaking of such rules. This is why we have suspended her account. All twitter accounts are equal for us. If anyone breaks rules, we will suspend their accounts.”
