Jain Monk Molests Girl then Commits Suicide

A 70-year-old Jain monk, convicted in a case of molestation of a 19-year-old girl, allegedly ended his life at a Jain temple in Mumbai.

Manohar Lal Muni, is a 70 year old Jain monk. He was the head monk at the Jain temple at Ghatkopar East. In March 2012, he molested a 19 year old girl, on the pretext of treating her, as she was depressed. The case went on in court, and in 2017 the Mulund Magistrate court in Mumbai found him guilty and sentenced him 2 years of imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of ? 50,000 to the victim. Lal appealed to the Sessions Court against the order.

Earlier this month, the verdict of the Magistrate Court was upheld by the Sessions Court. The police were soon going to arrest the monk. However, for the arrest to take place there was a long procedure. This process was delayed due to the ongoing pandemic situation.  Last week, on Thursday 20th May the monk ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at the Jain temple at Ghatkopar.

The police came, and the body was sent to Rajawadi Hospital, for a postmortem examination. Senior Inspector Sushil Kamble, from Pant Nagar police station said that they found a suicide note. In the note, Manohar Lal said he had a dream where his Guru asked him to sacrifice the world and join him in the afterlife. The monk said that this was why he was committing suicide.
