Jain Deaf Society Mumbai Launched to Make Religious Learning More Accessible
A new organisation, Jain Deaf Society Mumbai (JDSM), was launched on 2 October 2026 to help Deaf people learn about Jainism and take part in religious and cultural activities.
The society was an idea by Rushabh Bhansali and Ankit Parekh. Jain spiritual leader Param Gurudev Shri Namramuni Maharaj Sahib launched the initiative in Mumbai. More than 240 Deaf people from different parts of India attended the event.
The initiative aims to make Jain teachings, religious practices and community activities more accessible through Indian Sign Language (ISL) and other accessible forms of communication.
Why Was Jain Deaf Society Mumbai Started?
Religious programmes often depend on spoken language, which can make it difficult for some Deaf people to understand teachings and participate fully.
Jain Deaf Society Mumbai aims to reduce these communication barriers. It seeks to create opportunities for Deaf Jains to learn about their religion, connect with other members of the community and take part in religious and cultural activities.
The launch programme included a welcome session, a talk on Jainism, games, activities and a recognition ceremony. Participants also had time to meet and interact with others. The programme included Chovihar, a Jain practice of avoiding food and drink after sunset.
Param Gurudev Interacts With Deaf Participants
During the event, Param Gurudev interacted with participants through interpreters. They discussed life, spirituality and Jain principles. He shared the message that prayer comes from the heart and does not depend only on spoken words. The interaction gave participants an opportunity to engage with the spiritual leader and discuss questions related to their lives and religious beliefs.
Special Look N Learn Jain Gyan Dham Batch Introduced
The launch also marked the introduction of a special batch of Look N Learn Jain Gyan Dham for Deaf learners.
Look N Learn Jain Gyan Dham is a value-education programme started in 2007 under the guidance of Param Gurudev. It teaches children about Jain principles through interactive lessons and activities. The programme aims to help children develop values such as kindness, compassion and respect for others. The new batch seeks to make this learning accessible to Deaf learners as well.
This initiative adds a new opportunity for Deaf children to learn about Jain values and connect with their religious traditions.
Building a More Inclusive Jain Community
The launch of Jain Deaf Society Mumbai marks a step towards making religious learning and community participation more accessible to Deaf people.
Through the society and the special Look N Learn batch, the initiative aims to help Deaf Jains learn about their faith, meet other devotees and participate more fully in religious and cultural activities. It also highlights the importance of accessible communication in helping people take part in their religious communities.
