Israeli PM Netanyahu Calls UK an ‘Islamic Country’

Netanyahu’s “Islamic Republic of Britain” remark reflects growing tensions over the UK’s changing policies towards Israel and its growing Muslim population.

Before we begin, here’s a quick question: Which is the only Islamic country with nuclear weapons? The answer is Pakistan. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a very different answer.

While discussing the UK’s policies on a podcast hosted by Melech Blitzer Haim, Netanyahu reportedly referred to Britain as the “Islamic Republic of Britain.” This isn’t the first time such a remark has been made. In 2024, then-US Vice President JD Vance similarly questioned whether the UK could become the first Islamist country to acquire nuclear weapons.

So, why is Britain being described this way?

The comments come amid growing tensions between the UK and Israel. Britain has restricted some arms supplies to Israel over its Gaza military campaign, suspended trade talks with Israel, and recognised Palestine in 2025. These policy shifts have angered Israeli leaders.

Britain also has a growing Muslim population, currently around 6%, compared with about 2.7% in 2000. Muslims also have a significant political presence, including London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and several MPs. Some commentators argue that this influence has contributed to Britain taking a more critical position on Israel.

However, the UK government strongly rejected Netanyahu’s remarks, calling them “completely unacceptable.”

At the same time, the debate over Britain’s changing demographics continues, with research suggesting that one in six Britons believes the growing Muslim population poses a threat to UK culture.
