IPL Mega Auction: Rishabh Pant Becomes The Most Expensive Buy

The IPL 2025 auction featured record buys, with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer setting new price records, while some big names went unsold.

The IPL 2025 auction has been one of the most exciting and surprising events in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL). Held on November 24th and 25th in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the auction saw 10 IPL teams spend a massive ?639.15 crore to buy 182 players. This year’s auction brought some major changes, with new records being set and young talent making headlines.

The biggest surprise of the auction came with the record-breaking buys of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Pant was purchased by Lucknow Super Giants for a massive ?27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. Shreyas Iyer followed closely, bought by Punjab Kings for ?26.75 crore. This broke the previous record set by Mitchell Starc, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders last year for ?24.75 crore. KKR also made a big buy this year, spending ?23.75 crore on Venkatesh Iyer.

This year, the demand for Indian players was higher than ever. Indian spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal made a big splash when he was sold for ?18 crore to Punjab Kings, becoming the most expensive Indian spinner in IPL history. Fast bowlers were also in high demand, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar fetching ?10.75 crore from Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deepak Chahar going for ?9.25 crore to Mumbai Indians, and Akash Deep being bought for ?8 crore by Lucknow Super Giants. Other fast bowlers like Mukesh Kumar (?8 crore to Delhi) and Tushar Deshpande (?6.50 crore to Rajasthan) also saw huge bids.

Another surprising moment in the auction was the purchase of 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Rajasthan Royals made history by buying the young talent for ?1.10 crore, making him the youngest-ever player to be picked in the IPL Auction. His inclusion in the IPL has sparked excitement, as fans are eager to see how the young prodigy performs in the upcoming season.

While the auction saw some high-profile buys, it also left some big names unsold. Players like David Warner, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Shardul Thakur, Prithvi Shaw, and Jonny Bairstow did not find buyers this year, which was a surprising turn of events for many fans and experts.

IPL fans are used to seeing Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) table during auctions. However, this year, SRK was not present, and neither were his children, Aryan and Suhana Khan. There were reports that Shah Rukh Khan was busy with his professional commitments, possibly shooting for a film. Instead, KKR’s auction responsibilities were managed by Jay Mehta, husband of Juhi Chawla, and their daughter Jahnavi Mehta.

The IPL 2025 auction has given fans plenty to look forward to. With new star players joining different teams, the upcoming season is expected to be filled with excitement. Whether the huge buys like Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer live up to their price tags, or whether young players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi make their mark, it will be interesting to watch how the teams perform on the field.
