Sunjay Kapur, one of India’s richest businessmen and the former husband of Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor, passed away suddenly on 12 June 2025 in England at the age of 53.
Reports say Sunjay suffered a fatal heart attack while playing polo. Some sources added the unusual detail that he may have accidentally swallowed a bee during the match.
Born in 1971 in Michigan, USA, to a Punjabi family, Sunjay Kapur was a U.S. citizen.
He first married fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996, divorcing in 2000.
In 2003, he married Karisma Kapoor. They had two children, Samaira (20) and Kiaan (14), before divorcing in 2016. Sunjay had reportedly gifted bonds worth ?14 crore each to Samaira and Kiaan, along with a monthly allowance of ?10 lakh, a staggering sum for the next generation. Karisma Kapoor retained custody of their children and ownership of his father’s Mumbai house after their divorce.
In 2017, he married Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a son, Azarias (6).
Sunjay was chairman of Sona Comstar, the auto components giant founded by his late father, Surinder Kapur. The company, valued at around ?31,000 crore (nearly $4 billion), is part of a business empire worth $4 billion.
His personal net worth stood at ?13,000 crore (about $1.6 billion). His third wife, Priya Sachdev, is expected to oversee his ?10,300 crore estate.
There is speculation that Sunjay’s estranged sisters, Mandira and Preeti Kapur, may take active roles at Sona Comstar, but nothing official has been announced. The family and company have assured stakeholders that business will continue smoothly as legal matters proceed.
