India Defeat South Africa in 1st World Cup Match

India beat South Africa in their first match at this year’s World Cup. Rohit Sharma scores an unbeaten 122 runs.

After a long wait, India played their first match in the World Cup against South Africa in  Southampton, England in front of 18,500 people on 5th June. South Africa won the toss and chose to bat, and scored 227-9 in 50 overs. India score 230-4 in 47.3 overs. However India won. India’s bowlers kept the score down, with superb efforts by Yuzendra Chahal who took 4-51 making him the best bowler in the tournament so far. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar both took two wickets each.

India won with 15 balls to spare. It was a difficult match with no guarantee of a victory. Opener   Rohit Sharma was the hero for India scoring,122 runs not out. He scored his 23rd century moving ahead of Sourav Ganguly. Captain  Virat Kohli was caught out at 18 runs after a brilliant catch by wicketkeeper, Quinton de Kock.

South Africa have lost all three of their games in this year's tournament and have been facing injury issues as well. They were short two of their best bowlers  Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi both out with injuries.

Kohli said, this was Rohit Sharma’s best ODI performance till date as he dealt with the pressure like a true champion. India’s next game is against defending champions Australia on 9th June at the Oval cricket ground in London.
