IAS Officer Slaps Youth for Violating Lockdown in Chhattisgarh

District Collector in Chhattisgarh slapped a youth who was reportedly out to buy some medicines amid the statewide lockdown.

In the Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh, a district Collector, Ranbir Sharma slapped a young man, who had come out of his house to buy some medicines, during a lockdown. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the viral video, the District Collector is seen taking the youth's phone and then smashing it on the road. After this he slaps the youth, even though the boy tried to show him some papers to explain why he is outdoors during the lockdown. The district collector was not ready to listen. While this happens, some cops arrive at the scene. The district collector looks and says "maro ise". The police then start hitting the man with a stick. Towards the end of the video, the district collector can be heard instructing the cops to lodge an FIR against the youth.

The district magistrate said the boy was not a minor but 23 years old. He said the boy was speeding on his bike. When police tried to stop him, he tried to escape by over-speeding the bike but the police stopped him. He then made two different statements when asked for the reason he was out. Government official Sanjeev Gupta who works under the Union Home Ministry, reacted to the video by saying that the district collector's act was "despicable" and "unbecoming of an IAS officer.
