Hockey Player Misses Father’s Funeral for Semi-Finals

Lalremsiami is a striker on the Indian hockey team from Mizoram did not come back to India for her father’s funeral but stayed back to play the women’s hockey semi-final in Hiroshima, Japan.

The Indian women's hockey team is in Hiroshima, Japan for the FIH (International Hockey Federation) Series Finals hockey tournament. Lalremsiami is a striker on the Indian hockey team from Mizoram. Her father passed away due to a heart attack on the morning of 21st June. She was supposed to attend her father’s funeral at Kolasib in Mizoram.However Lalremsiami decided to stay and play the India Vs Chile Semi-Final match, that was held on 22nd June. When asked why she decided to stay, she said that she wanted to make her father’s soul proud.

Lalremsiami’s choice was well rewarded. India won the semifinal by beating Chile 4-2 on Saturday .  India also won the FIH Series Finals hockey tournament on Sunday by defeating Japan 3-1.Indian women’s hockey team captain Rani also praised Lalremsiami’s decision. She and said that the team was trying their best to support her in the tough times.Praising Lalremsiami’s decision, Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju Tweeted, “Indian women hockey player Lalremsiami’s father expired when India was to play a crucial semifinal at Hiroshima that would determine if India’s Olympics dream would be alive. She told coach, ‘I want to make my father proud. I want to stay, play and make sure India qualifies”.
