With the aim to reduce rash driving, accidents, and improve road safety the Gurugram Traffic Police department has deployed drones along the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. The drones were activated and put to service on 1st December 2023 and since then the Gurugram Traffic Police have issued 8,377 fines amounting to a total of ?74,92,900. The fines include 7,060 trucks, 675 passenger buses, 403 cars and 239 educational institutions affiliated buses. These drones are equipped with latest & cutting edge optical cameras and actively survey the roadway. They operate autonomously by following predetermined/pre-set schedules and locations. The specialized optical cameras of the drone can capture high-resolution images of vehicles from up to 2 kilometers away. This allows the drones to not only detect rules violations but also to zoom in with remarkable precision on license plate numbers and identify the violators. When the drone identifies a rule violation, it alerts the traffic police officers stationed at the end of the roads. As a result, the traffic police officers are able to intercept and fine the offending vehicles almost immediately. In case the car is missed by the officers then the fines are issued based on the license plate captured by the drone. During peak time, these drones fly above traffic and provide comprehensive surveillance to monitor and enforce traffic regulations. According to the local traffic police data, 945 accidents, 402 road deaths and 800 people were injured in road accidents between 1 January and 19th December 2023.
