Gujarat Govt Decides to Rename Dragon Fruit to ‘Kamalam’

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and the Gujarat government decided to rename Dragon Fruit to Kamalam as it looks like a lotus.

On 19th January Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani  said, “Dragon fruit is largely grown in Kutch, Navsari, and different parts of Saurashtra. The name dragon fruit is not proper, and due to its name, one thinks that the fruit is grown in China. But it is actually a fruit that grows in Gujarat.” He said that this is why the Gujarat Government has decided to rename dragon fruit as Kamalam. Kamalam in Sanskrit means lotus. Rupani said they decided on the name Kamalam because Farmers say it looks like lotus.

Many people said it was unnecessary to rename the fruit. Some said the CM decided to rename the fruit due to political reasons as the symbol of BJP is also a lotus. However the CM said there is no political reason.
