Govt. Launches E-Shram Card Registration for Workers

The government has launched the E-Shram card for the unorganised sector. Watch our latest for all the details!

In India, all of us have the Aadhar Card which has all our details like name, address, date of birth etc. The Aadhar Card is an identity of Indian citizens. Similarly, the Ministry of Labour and Employment launched the E-Shram portal on August 26, 2021. People registering on this portal get a E-Shram card. It was launched to form a database of workers in the unorganized sectors. The Database will have details of these workers like their name, address, bank account number, qualification, skills, work, etc.

Unorganized Sector is a sector in which the rules and regulation set by the government related to employment are generally not followed. Government has many rules related to employment Like in and out time, payment - which is not very high and not very low, leave, maternity leave, bonus, safety, insurance, work timings - employees are not made to work 24X7 etc. However, for example maids, servants, drivers, shopkeepers, labourers, milkmen, these workers do not have such rules. They have to follow the rules made by their employer and many times they are exploited. Many small businesses do not follow the rules laid by the government related to employment. Usually for these jobs, people get poorly paid. They are generally made to work for long hours. Their jobs are not very secured and people can get fired for no proper reason. There is usually no extra benefit given to the workers. Salaries, increments and promotions rules are not followed properly.

So the government has launched the E-Shram portal so data of all these workers can be kept. This will help the workers who are registered to avail benefits. L Workers will benefit from the government’s different social security programs. The immediate benefit that an e-Shram cardholder will get is accident insurance coverage of Rs 2 lakh if the worker dies or there is permanent disability and that of Rs 1 lakh for suffering a partial disability.  You all are aware that during the Covid pandemic so many of these workers suffered and the government did not have any data on them. Now if they are registered on the E-Shram portal, during such emergencies, the database will be used to provide necessary assistance to the workers. The registration under the e-SHRAM portal is totally free and the registration is done at Common Service Centres (CSCs).  They can also directly register through the e-SHRAM portal eshram.gov.in.

20 crore registrations have been done on the E-Shram portal so far. The registration is done using their Aadhar card and bank account details. On the E-Shram card there will be a 12-digit UAN number. It will be a permanent number once assigned and will remain unchanged for the worker’s life.

However, many fraudsters are also looting the innocent people wanting to register by emptying their bank accounts. In one of the cases in Bihar, a man helped people to register on the E-Shram portal. While he registered their names and details, he kept records of their bank accounts and somehow fooled and hacked their accounts and withdrew money from it. The villagers found money being withdrawn from accounts. They grew suspicious and complained to the police who then checked the man’s mobile and laptop and the truth was found. The man was arrested.

In other cases, registration on the portal is free, however many people are charging Rs. 100 - 300 to help people register on the portal. The government has announced that cards would be given to beneficiaries free of cost.
