Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest known marathon runner, passed away at 114 after a tragic hit-and-run near his birthplace in Punjab on 14 July, 2025.

Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, passed away on 14th July 2025 at the age of 114 in a tragic road accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar district. Known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” Singh was hit by a speeding SUV while crossing the road near his birthplace, Beas Pind village.

The driver, 26-year-old Amritpal Singh Dhillon, an NRI from Canada, has been arrested. Police said Singh could have survived if he had been taken to the hospital on time.

Born in 1911, Fauja Singh started running marathons at the age of 89. He became the first 100-year-old to complete a marathon and ran many races across the world. He inspired millions with his strength, simplicity, and positive spirit.

He was awarded several honours, including the British Empire Medal and Pride of India. Singh followed a simple vegetarian lifestyle and became a symbol of healthy and active living even in old age.

Tributes are pouring in from across the world. His coach and friends are raising funds to build a memorial clubhouse in his name to keep his memory alive.
