Dr Manmohan Singh: Former Indian Prime Minister Dies At 92
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at 92, leading to national mourning and tributes for his significant contributions to India's economy and politics.
India’s former Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away on 26th December 2024 at the age of 92. Singh, who had been in poor health for several months, suddenly lost consciousness at his Delhi home in the evening. Despite efforts by his family to revive him, he was rushed to the AIIMS hospital in Delhi around 8:00 pm. Unfortunately, despite medical intervention, he was declared dead at 9:51 pm.
AIIMS confirmed Singh’s death, citing "age-related medical conditions" as the cause. His passing has led to an outpouring of tributes and condolences from across the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief, praising Singh for his distinguished leadership, wisdom, and immense contribution to India’s economy. President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute to Singh, calling him "one of the greatest sons of Bharat" and highlighting his humble political life and unblemished service to the nation.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, along with party MPs Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Sonia Gandhi, also mourned the loss. Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, who were attending a meeting in Karnataka, are returning to Delhi for Singh’s last rites.
International leaders, including Maldivian President Abdulla Shahid, former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, and Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov, offered their condolences.
In honor of Dr. Singh, the Indian government has declared a 7-day national mourning period. The national flag will fly at half-mast at all government buildings, including Rashtrapati Bhavan. The government has also canceled all official programs, while Congress has canceled its foundation day celebrations. The Indian cricket team will wear black armbands during the 2nd day of the IND vs AUS Test series in Melbourne, Australia, as a mark of respect.
Dr. Singh, known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s economic policies, supporting the middle class, and opening up India to global competition. He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters. His funeral will take place on 28th December 2024 with full state honors.
