Deaf Taxi Driver in Paisley Convicted in Domestic Abuse Cases

Iftikhar Sharif is a 47 year old deaf man and drove a private cab in Paisley, Scotland . He was locked up for almost a year after he was engaging in a “course of conduct of physical violence and psychological abuse” against the victims at a house in the town’s Hillman Crescent. Iftikhar Sharif, was convicted of six charges of assault and domestic abuse after a lengthy trial at Paisley Sheriff Court. Sheriff Colin Pettigrew saw harrowing evidence and even involved young witnesses to come to court to give their statements. After seeing the evidence, the judge sentenced Iftikhar to 340 days jail. 

The judge told him, “You could not control your malice. You failed to accept responsibility and blamed the complainers. It was repeated psychological, physical and emotional abuse. There can be only one way of dealing with this and that is a custodial sentence.”

Iftikhar Sharif was found guilty of 

  1. assaulting a young girl by repeatedly kicking and punching her and pulling her to the floor, and lying on top of her on dates between October 2010 and February 2019.

  2. attacking a woman by pushing her, repeatedly punching and kicking her on the body to her injury on dates between October 2010 and April 2017.

  3. shouting, swearing, signing abusive remarks, throwing plates and food around on various occasions on dates between October 2010 and February 2019.

  4. attacking a young boy by repeatedly slapping him on dates in July 2016.

Defence agent Gemma Elder said, “He is a 47-year-old single man who is a taxi driver, but his licence was suspended as a result of this criminal case. The trial had multiple days of evidence and he was convicted accordingly. This conviction will cost him significant difficulties in obtaining his licence. In his own defence, he continues to maintain his innocence.”

Sheriff Pettigrew locked him up and told him, “This abuse and course of conduct continued over a significant period of time. I will impose a sentence of 340 days in respect of the charges.” He also gave Sharif a Non Harassment Order lasting six years preventing him from approaching or contacting any of the victims.
