Dalit Woman Raped in Uttar Pradesh
In Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a 19-year-old Dalit woman has died after being brutally raped by upper caste men.
In Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a 19-year-old Dalit woman on September 14, had gone to the fields to cut grass with her family. Men belonging to upper castes pounced on her dragged her by her dupatta, took her to a Bajra field, and raped her. When the family realized the girl was missing, they began looking for her. When they found her she was brutally wounded. She had a deep cut in her tongue and her spinal cord was broken because she was dragged mercilessly. The woman had been initially admitted to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College And Hospital at the Aligarh Muslim University but was moved to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital ICU on Monday 28th September because of her serious injuries.
On 23rd Sept the girl had briefly regained consciousness. That time she told the police what happened and gave the names of the men who had raped her. Unfortunately, she died on 28th Sept. The accused — Sandeep, Ramu, Lavkush, and Ravi — have now been arrested and booked for rape and murder. The family had slammed the UP Police for not taking action against the rapists. The family said the men were arrested only after the news went viral and people started protesting. Her family said that one of the rapists named Sandeep is an alcoholic and always harasses Dalits. The girl’s brother said, "They are upper castes and have always called us names. We ignore them. Sandeep harasses women, but nobody ever files a complaint. We want justice for my sister. They all must be hanged.” The news has triggered massive outrage in India.
