Cyclone Asani: Heavy Wind & Rain in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to see heavy rain amid alert over Cyclone Asani.

The Cyclone Asani which is expected to hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today. The cyclone is already there at the sea 250km off the coast of Andaman and Nicobar. It is likely to move towards the island today. It is not sure whether it will reach the island or not. However, the IMD predicts that there will be heavy rains. This is the first cyclone this year that has put rescue teams on alert. Strong winds with speeds reaching 55-65 km per hour are likely to cause damage and disruption apart from rain. People living along the coast have been evacuated. Several teams of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) have been deployed in Port Blair, the government has said. Army and Navy are also on standby.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture along and off the islands on Monday and Tuesday. Tourist activities have been suspended in certain areas. Partial disruption of power lines, flooding of roads, "localised landslides or mudslides" are expected.
