‘Cyclone Yaas’ Headed Towards West Bengal & Odisha

The governments of Bengal and Odisha are on high alert for the very severe cyclonic storm Yaas heading their way from the Bay of Bengal.

The governments of West Bengal and Odisha are on high alert for the very severe cyclonic storm Yaas heading their way from the Bay of Bengal and likely to reach on 25th May 2021. The state of West Bengal & northern part of Odisha will receive heavy rainfall. On 25th & 26th May. Both states will be hit by wind speeds likely to whip up to 155 to 165 kmph gusting at 185 kmph. This will be the second cyclone to hit Indian coast within ten days after Cyclone Tauktae. Cyclone Yaas is expected to be about as intense as Cyclone Tauktae but it is less strong than Cyclone Amphan which hit West Bengal one year ago. In both states, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the military and the Coast Guard have been pressed into service. Of 85 NDRF teams, 32 have been deployed in Bengal and 28 in Odisha. Some teams are also out in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 

The West Bengal government has set up a control room which will be manned by Mamata Banerjee herself on 25thy & 26th May. West Bengal has ordered the evacuation of people from areas like West Medinipur, Jhargram, and Digha. Hooghly, Howrah,  and Kolkata are on high alert. IMD’s Regional Centre at Bhubaneswar has told everyone to be on high alert and has told fishermen not to venture out in the sea. North Odisha districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Mayurbhanj will receive moderate to heavy rainfall on 25th May with the rainfall intensity increasing to very heavy on 26th May.
