Cyclone Biporjoy: 30,000 People Evacuated From Kutch

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a storm surge warning for the coastal areas of Gujarat in view of very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a warning for the coastal areas of Gujarat.

The IMD has said the severe cyclone will be coming to Gujarat and Pakistan’s Karachi on 15 June 2023.

The cyclone will cause heavy rainfall in Kachchh, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Morbi, Junagarg and Rajkot districts. While Biparjoy lost some of its intensity to become a very severe cyclone, experts warned that it could pick up the pace again and cause colossal devastation in Gujarat. The very severe cyclonic storm can cause floods, uproot power and communication poles in these areas and disrupt railways, and damage standing crops, plantations, and gardens. There will be a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 km/hr gusting to 150 km/hr. Around 95 trains running through, originating or terminating in coastal areas of Gujarat will remain cancelled or short-terminated till June 15, according to Indian Railway. Till now, 30,000 people have been evacuated from the coastal areas of Kutch. However, authorities are facing a challenge as many villagers are reluctant to leave their livestock and belongings behind. Tourists and the local population are not allowed to visit Gomti Ghat, Shivrajpur Beach, Bet Dwarka, and other places along the coast. Fishermen in the area have been warned to stay away from the coast for five days. Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting through video conferencing to review the preparedness for Cyclone Biparjoy and told officials to ensure zero casualties.
The Central Government has deployed an adequate number of NDRF teams for relief and rescue operations. Along with this, units and assets of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard have been deployed for help as per requirements. Because of Biparjoy Mumbai also witnessed strong winds and high tides. At Juhu beach 3 boys died by drowning and 1 is still missing. If there are strong winds and rains in your area, please take precautions and avoid going outside.
