Cricket To Be Included in 2028 Olympics
Nita Ambani hosted the 141st IOC session, securing cricket as an Olympic sport with support from PM Modi for hosting future Olympics in India.
The International Olympic Committee is a non-governmental sports organization based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the authority responsible for organizing the Olympic Games. The current president of the IOC is Thomas Bach. Under the IOC, there are 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Held on an annual basis, the IOC Session is a general meeting of the IOC members to undertake critical decisions related to host nations for upcoming international sporting events, the election of IOC members and office-bearers, inclusion or exclusion of sports and federations etc. Under Nita Ambani’s leadership, Reliance Foundation’s Education and Sports for All initiative has reached out to over 21.5 million children and youth across India. Through this initiative, Reliance Foundation is actively working to make India a truly multi-sport nation. Nita Ambani is the first woman from India to be elected as an IOC member. In February 2022, the Nita Ambani-led Indian delegation presented a compelling pitch at the IOC session in Beijing for hosting the 141st session in Mumbai. The bid was accepted and from 15th to 17th October 2023, the 141st IOC session was held in Mumbai’s Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Session on 14th October and President of IOC, Mr Thomas Bach was present at the session. India is conducting the IOC Session for the first time in 40 years. The country hosted its previous IOC session in New Delhi in 1983. IOC members voted to include Cricket as an Olympic Sport in the LA Summer Olympics 2028.
Nita Ambani said, “As an IOC member, a proud Indian, and an ardent cricket fan, I am delighted that IOC members have voted to include Cricket. In the history of the Olympics, cricket has featured as one of the sports only once in 1900, which was played by only two participating teams with 12 players each and played a test match for 2 days. Prime Minister Modi presented scientific evidence of this ancient sport legacy of India. The Prime Minister emphasized that sports has been a vital part of India’s culture and lifestyle. When you go to the villages of India, one can find that any festival remains incomplete without sports. He mentioned Khelo India Games, Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India Winter Games, “We are focussing on inclusivity and diversity in sports in India.” He recalled the magnificent performances of many athletes in the last edition of the Olympics and also highlighted India’s best-ever performance in the recently concluded Asian Games. PM Modi added, “This is a dream of 140 crore Indians. We want to fulfill this dream with your support. We are willing to host the 2029 Youth Olympics and 2036 Olympics in India. I am sure India will get constant support from the IOC.”
