The country has been in lockdown since 25th March. Everyone is planning about how to safely work after the lockdown is over / lifted. On Monday, 11th May was ‘National Technology Day’. On this day the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad announced an innovative digital solution as preparation for post lockdown. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) will introduce/start a contactless terminal entry for air travelers. It is the first time that such a method would be used for entering an airport terminal.

In its press note GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited said that it is for the safety of the passengers and it will be the new rule for social distancing at the airport. Earlier in the normal process, the passengers showed their travel itinerary/ticket and government photo ID to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel for verification at the gate. Now the passengers will display the documents in front of a high-definition camera installed at each gate at the domestic departures terminal.

The output/image of the camera will be verified by the CISF Personnel from the specially designed computer monitor. This monitor will be kept at a safe distance from the passengers. After the document check and satisfaction of the CISF personnel, the passenger will be allowed to enter the terminal. At each departure gate there will be thermal cameras to measure the temperature of every passenger in a non-intrusive way. If the passengers have high temperatures, they will be stopped from entering the terminal and airport health officers will be alerted about it. There are other interventions at Hyderabad airport also. All counters have been fitted with acrylic shields to stop any direct contact between passengers and the check-in staff. Earlier, at the check-in counters the boarding pass printing and baggage tag dispensing machine were facing the staff. All boarding card printing and baggage tag dispensing machines will be re-oriented facing the passengers. After the check-in, the passengers will themselves collect the boarding cards and baggage tags.
