Bipin Rawat Becomes India’s Chief of Defence Staff

General Bipin Rawat, retired as Army Chief on December 31st and became the first Chief of Defense Staff of India.

General Bipin Rawat, will retire as Army Chief on December 31. On Monday 30th December, it was announced that he will be the next first Chief of Defense Staff of India. On Independence Day, at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the government would create a post called CDS. This post Would act as a bridge between the government and all three services.For a long time the Three military forces of India have been asking for a CDS. Last week, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the post and also released duties of the CDS. 

In 2001, the Kargil review committee was formed to assess the damage of the Kargil war. That time the committee had said that, if a CDS had been there the losses would have been less and there would have been better coordination among forces and the government.The Cabinet said the person has to streamline operations, logistics, training, support services, communications, repairs, and maintenance.Rawat will be India's first CDS. He assumed office on December 31, 2016 and would retire after completing three years.
