Benjamin Netanyahu Removed from Office After 12yrs
Benjamin Netanyahu`s record 12-year run as Israel's prime minister ended on Sunday with parliament approving a new "government of change" led by nationalist Naftali Bennett.
Benjamin Netanyahu was the PM of Israel for 12 years. He is the longest serving PM in Israeli history.
There were four inconclusive elections in two years and Netanyahu continued to be PM. However, on 13th June, eight political parties with little in common except to pull Netanyahu from power came together. There was a vote in Israel’s parliament. But the razor-thin 60-59 vote helped to remove Netanyahu from power and he was replaced by Naftali Bennett as Israel’s new Prime Minister. Under the coalition deal, Bennett will be replaced as prime minister in 2023 by Yair Lapid, 57, a popular former television host. Naftali Bennett, once considered Benjamin Netanyahu as his Guru and worked in the Netanyahu government as a minister before they fell out.
He felt that Netanyahu was a soft leader and decided to remove him from power and now he is successful. Bennett, is a 49-year-old Orthodox Jew with American parents and is a former tech entrepreneur who made millions before switching to, and getting deeply involved in, politics. The major political difference between Netanyahu and Naftali Bennet is spelt on Palestine. Currently More than 6 lakh Jews live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Palestinian leaders have been demanding the withdrawal of Jewish settlements in these areas. Netanyahu and Naftali Bennet have very different views on this issue. Netanyahu had recognised that Israel and Palestine can co-exist together with Israel having control over East Jerusalem and West Bank. While Naftali Bennett has been a strong supporter of the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He had said, “There is not going to be a Palestinian state within the tiny land of Israel It's just not going to happen. A Palestinian state would be a disaster. I will not accept this.” Bennett has also taken a hard line towards Palestinian militants, and has endorsed the death penalty for them. Now we will have to wait and watch to see how Naftali Bennett works ahead.
