Bangladesh 3-Month-Old Baby Abused by Aunt: Secretly Recorded Video Goes Viral
A viral video of a 3-month-old baby's alleged abuse by his aunt in Bangladesh triggered public outrage and a police investigation.
A shocking case of alleged child abuse has come to light from Narsingdi, Bangladesh, after a viral video showed a 3-month-old baby's leg being twisted by his aunt. The video sparked public outrage and prompted a police investigation.
The baby, Rizik, is the son of Jahirul Haque Jahir and Saifa Begum. According to reports, the family had an ongoing dispute with Jahirul's sister, 32-year-old Lata Begum.
The viral video reportedly shows that on 11 July, after the baby's mother briefly left him alone, Lata Begum came and twisted the baby's leg. Hearing the baby cry, the mother immediately returned. It was later revealed that the mother had secretly kept her mobile phone recording the incident.
She shared the video with her brother, Ibrahim. On 14 July, the video was uploaded to Facebook and quickly went viral. Many social media users claimed that the baby's leg had been broken.
When police questioned the family, the parents said it was a private family matter that had already been settled. They claimed that their son had not suffered any fracture or serious injury, said the viral posts contained false claims, and added that they had forgiven Lata Begum.
As the parents refused to file a complaint, the police started an investigation on their own. The baby was taken to the district hospital for an X-ray to check for any injuries.
Police arrested Lata Begum's husband, Kawsar Ahmed, and questioned her father-in-law, Almas Mia, and mother-in-law, Shefali Begum. However, Lata Begum fled the area and is currently absconding.
Police have also seized the mobile phone used to record the video and are investigating who uploaded and spread the video on social media.
