B. S. Yediyurappa Resigns as Karnataka Chief Minister

For months, there has been a lot of speculation that the BJP wants to remove BS Yediyurappa as Karnataka’s chief minister. This is because there was a lot of internal politics among the BJP party. Everyone thought that Yediyurappa would for sure resign but he kept everyone guessing till the very last minute. Yesterday 26th July, there was a programme for the 2nd year anniversary of the BJP government in Karnataka. At the programme, Yediyurappa gave a speech and announced that he is voluntarily stepping down as CM. While giving the speech he broke down and said in a choked voice that he has always worked to build the party and even when the then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had asked him once to become a central minister, he had chosen to stay back in Karnataka to work for BJP. He said, "I thank PM Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and JP Nadda. They gave me the chance to rule as Chief Minister despite being over 75. I had decided to resign some time back. Nobody pressured me to resign. I thought it best to resign today as we mark the completion of two years in this term.”
Yediyurappa said even though he is stepping down as the CM he will continue to work for the BJP party and help towards the development of Karnataka. He then met the Governor of Karnataka and handed in his resignation. Yediyurappa will continue as the CM till another CM is elected. BJP party leaders will decide who will be the next CM. Hours after Yediyurappa resigned from the post of Karnataka CM, Opposition party leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah termed him as the “most corrupt chief minister” and said that the resignation was expected. Basavaraj Somappa Bommai has been selected by the BJP as the CM of Karnataka to replace BS Yediyurappa.
