Assam: Rhino Badly Hit By Truck Caught on Camera

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video of a truck hitting a rhinoceros on a highway in the Kaziranga National Park area.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, 9th of October shared a video of a truck hitting a rhinoceros on a highway in the Kaziranga National Park area. The truck driver was intercepted and fined and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the message: No infringement allowed in rhinos' space. The death of wildlife in road accidents due to the expansion of infrastructure and development projects has been a recurring concern. The Assam CM, highlighting that quick action was taken against the offender, emphasised that his government will not allow infringement on wildlife and nature. CCTV footage shared by Himanta Biswa Sarma shows a truck hitting a rhinoceros after it suddenly came onto the highway. 

The incident took place on National Highway 37 of Assam, which falls within the Kaziranga national Park limits. The video shows the rhino trying to get up after being badly hit by the truck but stumbling and falling down. Later, after trying for a couple of times, the rhino managed to get up and run back to the forest. Notably, the speed limit at the Haldibari corridor, where the incident happened, is 40 km per hour but the truck was speeding at 52 km per hour, a forest official was quoted as saying by PTI. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, Rhinos are our special friends; we will not allow any infringement on their space. In this unfortunate incident at Haldibari, the Rhino survived; the vehicle was intercepted and fined, the chief minister further added.
