Assam’s Deaf Community Comes Together to Support Flood-Hit Families
The Deaf community in Upper Assam came together to provide relief materials and food to flood-affected families in Sivasagar.
The floods in Assam affected parts of Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat, damaging homes, livestock and livelihoods. Many families were left in need of basic supplies.
Members of the Deaf community in Upper Assam also joined the relief efforts. People from Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Duliajan, Jorhat, Majuli and other areas collected donations from members, supporters and well-wishers to arrange relief materials.
On 12 August 2026, the Upper Assam District Association of the Deaf (UADAD) organised a relief distribution programme at Betbari in Sivasagar district. The team was led by UADAD President Bijoy Gohain and Vice President Manas Pratim Pohuchingia.
The group distributed essential daily-use items, including buckets, sanitary napkins, bleaching powder, floor cleaner, plates, steel glasses, face masks, mosquito repellents, Dettol soap, body lotion, matchboxes, candles, biscuits, drinking water, chocolates and other supplies.
A separate relief drive was also carried out by the Assam Association of the Deaf in the Sivasagar area. The team first visited Vinayak Hotel in Jayasagar, where lunch was arranged for 20 flood-affected families.
Later, the team visited different flood-hit areas, met affected families and distributed more relief materials such as puffed rice, roasted rice, sugar, tea leaves, bleaching powder, spices, soap and biscuits.
The two relief efforts showed how members of Assam's Deaf community came together to support families affected by the floods and help them during a difficult time.
