Aftab Poonawala Wants Law Books To Help His Lawyers
Aftab requested the court to release his debit and credit card to buy warm clothes and to provide him with law books so that he can help his lawyers in the case.
Aftab Poonawala’s name has become famous. The news of his killing his partner Shraddha Walkar and chopping her body into 35 pieces, went viral. Currently Aftab has been lodged at cell no 15 of Jail No 4 at Tihar Jail in Delhi. You all know how dirty and difficult life is in jail. However you will be surprised to know how Aftab spends his time in jail. Aftab does not talk to anyone. Aftab shares his cell with two thieves and plays chess with them. The two thieves play in one team and aftab plays alone. But when these two thieves play chess, Aftab stares at the chess board and often keenly observes the games as if to assess their moves. Jail officials said that whenever he gets a chance, he starts playing chess alone. Aftab strategies and plays both sides himself. According to jail sources, Aftab appears to be calm in jail. Most of the time, he is said to be sleeping when he is in his cell. The accused does not give away any signs of fear or remorse.
Jail authorities had provided him with a copy of ‘The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train Through Asia’, a travelogue by American novelist Paul Theroux after he had requested them to provide him with English novels and literature books to read.
On January 6, Poonawala had moved an application for the release of his debit and credit cards which were earlier seized by the police. His lawyer had said Poonawala was in urgent need of money for purchasing warm clothes as his family has broken all ties with him and he has no source of income. He also requested the jail authorities to give him law books related to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure CRPC as he wants to know the law. Aftab said he wants to learn the law to help lawyers fight the case.
On 10th January 2023 there was a court hearing in the jail premises. Judge conducted the hearing in the Jail and Aftab was physically produced before him. He also rejected Aftab’s application seeking the release of his debit and credit cards. The court refused to release the cards as the investigation is still continuing and the cards may be required in the probe. However, the Tihar jail authorities have agreed to his demand of being provided with law books to study. The court has also directed the authorities to provide him with warm clothes.
