A Robot to Help the Elderly Live Alone

Robots to help the live independently.

The scientists at the Washington State University [WSU] have created a robot so that elderly people can independently in their own homes. Robot Activity Support System or RAS uses sensors which are placed around the house.

The Robot with the help of the sensor can tell where the person is in the house, what they are doing and whether they need any help. The Robot can move around in the house on it’s own and can provide video instructions on how to do simple tasks. It can even guide the owner to take their medicine or have a snack at the kitchen.

The number of adults above the age of 85 is going to triple by 2050. This robot could help the elderly who have dementia or other illness live independently.

The RAS can help to reduce the burden on the healthcare system by helping the elderly live alone. A professor at WSU said that instead of sending the elderly to nursing homes or calling nurses to take care of them, the RAS can help them live independently.
