9,000 Girls Celebrated: Woman’s Mission Changes Mindsets Across 900 Villages
Dr. Ebha Patel's Ghar Ayee Nanhi Pari movement is changing mindsets by celebrating the birth of girls and supporting thousands of rural women and daughters.
A woman from Uttar Pradesh is changing the way people celebrate the birth of daughters through a unique social movement called Ghar Ayee Nanhi Pari.
The inspiration came from Malti Dixit's experience. When her daughter was born, instead of congratulating her, many people felt sorry for her and asked when she would have a son.
Dr. Ebha Patel, from Khadepur village in Uttar Pradesh, wanted to change this mindset. After seeing girls face discrimination and child marriage in her village, she became the first woman engineer from the village and later completed a PhD in Artificial Intelligence.
Using her education, she started Ghar Ayee Nanhi Pari, a campaign that celebrates the birth of girls and supports rural women and children.
In the beginning, many families refused to listen to her or her team. But they continued visiting villages, meeting families and speaking with village leaders.
Gradually, newborn girls began to be welcomed with celebrations in panchayat halls. Mothers received certificates and information about government welfare schemes.
The movement later expanded to include healthcare, nutrition, vaccinations and girls' education. It also helped women become financially independent through dairy equipment, sewing, embroidery and vocational training.
Today, the initiative works across Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. According to NITI Aayog, it has reached around 700 panchayats and supported more than 9,000 mothers and newborn girls, while improving access to healthcare, government services and economic opportunities.
Dr. Ebha Patel says the biggest success is the change in people's thinking. Families that once worried about having a daughter are now celebrating their daughters and investing in their health, education and future. Her message is simple: Every girl deserves love, equal opportunities, and the chance to build her own future.
