Jhansi Protest Turns Chaotic; Five Arrested After Road Blockade

A protest outside the Police Lines in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, turned violent on 24 October 2026. Five people were arrested after traffic was blocked and protesters allegedly clashed with commuters and police officers. The dispute involved two transgender groups arguing over areas where they collected traditional badhai payments.

Why Did the Protest Take Place in Jhansi?

The dispute involved two groups led by Babli Kinnar and Anshika, also known as Abhishek.

According to reports, Anshika had previously worked with Babli’s group. She was later removed following complaints that she was visiting areas without informing the group and demanding money. Anshika then formed a separate group. The two groups continued to disagree over which areas each could visit to collect badhai — traditional payments given during celebrations such as weddings and childbirth.

Complaints and an Earlier Police Station Incident

On 21 October, members of both groups reportedly approached Nawabad police station to file complaints against each other. During the dispute, Anshika allegedly attempted to drink phenyl. Police took her for medical treatment. Officers also detained three people over concerns that the dispute could disturb public peace.

Anshika later alleged that police were not acting on her complaints and that members of the rival group had threatened to kill her.

Protest Disrupts Traffic Outside Police Lines

On 24 October, Anshika arrived outside the Senior Superintendent of Police’s office near Police Lines with her mother, Mamta, and other members of her group. The group demanded police action. The protest escalated when barricades were moved onto the road, blocking traffic.

Videos shared on social media appeared to show protesters climbing onto car bonnets and arguing with commuters. Reports also alleged that some protesters removed their clothes during the demonstration. When officers attempted to control the situation, some protesters allegedly pushed, kicked or manhandled them. A security guard was also reportedly pushed to the ground after asking the group not to block the road.

Police eventually restored traffic and brought the situation under control.

Five People Arrested

Police arrested five people in connection with the incident. They were identified in reports as:

  • Anshika, also known as Abhishek
  • Pooja
  • Nayantara
  • Russian Kinnar
  • Mamta, Anshika’s mother

Police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and initiated further legal proceedings. Jhansi Police later said the situation had returned to normal. The case involves allegations against the arrested individuals, and the legal process is continuing.

The incident highlights how a long-running dispute between two groups escalated into a public confrontation, disrupting traffic and prompting police action.
