4G Internet Resumes in 2 Districts of J&K

Following the Supreme Court’s directives, 4G internet will resume in the districts of Ganderbal and Udhampur districts of Jammu Kashmir.

On 11th May The Supreme Court had asked the Central Government to explore the possibility of restoring 4G mobile internet services in J&K because Former J&K Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu had supported the decision to start internet services. Foundation for Media Professionals, a non-government organization, then filed a complaint against the Central Government in SC because the Central Government did not listen to SC’s 11th May decision. The Supreme Court of India had constituted a panel to review the restrictions in relation to the security situation in the Union Territory. 

During the hearing of the petition, on 16th August, as per the recommendation of the panel, the SC announced 4G internet services on a trial basis will be restored in two districts in Jammu and Kashmir from 16 th August. The services were restored in Ganderbal and Udhampur districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. As per the committee’s decision 2 districts will have 4G internet and the rest of the 18 districts will have 2G internet. This will be for the first time J&K will have high speed mobile internet in any area since the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of J&K into the 2 Union Territories.
