Issued by the Reserve Bank of India, banknotes are printed on special cotton-based security paper that is stronger than ordinary paper and has a distinctive texture.
Each note features a portrait and watermark of Mahatma Gandhi, a metallic security thread, micro-lettering, fluorescent ink, and hidden elements like latent images and see-through registers. Some denominations also use colour-shifting ink that changes when the note is tilted.
To help visually impaired users, notes include raised intaglio printing, tactile bleed lines, and different sizes and colours for each denomination.
The denomination is printed in 17 languages, reflecting India’s linguistic diversity, while the reverse side showcases symbols of India’s heritage, culture, and achievements.
Every note carries a unique serial number and the year of printing, making each one traceable and distinct.
In 2020, the Reserve Bank of India launched the MANI app, which helps visually impaired people identify notes using audio and vibration.
