Dangers of Removing Nose Hair

Plucking nose hairs can lead to infections or ingrown hairs. Watch the video for all the details.

Maintaining hygiene in your body is very necessary. Specifically the organ which helps us breathe! The nose. The nose is humid and often filled with little waste particles. Well, just like brushing our teeth, we should follow a nasal cleanliness routine twice a day, in the morning and again in the evening. We can wash our noses using saltwater. A salt and water solution is effective in clearing out mucus, crusts, germs, and other pollutants from your nose. Nose hair is a natural part of the human body that serves as a defense system. Nose hair keeps harmful wastes out of the body system and maintains moisture in the air we breathe. In simple terms, it is like a fence that covers the gates for entering the lungs. The fence holds on to any dust, allergens and bad particles and only lets the air pass through. Although nose hair serves a useful function, you may decide you want to remove it for personal reasons.

Dangers of removing nose hair

  1. Removing too many hairs allows more particles to pass through your nose and into your lungs. For some people, this may increase their risk for developing asthma and allergies.

  2. An ingrown hair is a common complication of hair removal. It occurs when a hair that’s been removed grows back into your skin and can’t emerge from its follicle. Ingrown hairs usually heal by themselves, but can be very painful and uncomfortable. If it becomes a chronic problem, you may want to see your doctor.

  3. Infection - It most commonly develops as a result of a bacterial infection when a bacteria enters a wound in your nose.

  4. Sometimes you can have a dangerous infection called, ‘Nasal Furunculosis’. It is a deep infection that happens in the hair follicle in your nose.

There’s no health benefit to removing nose hair. Although you may have thought about plucking your nose hair, you might want to put down the tweezers and pick up a trimmer instead. Just shorten the length of your nose hair carefully so it doesn’t make you uncomfortable!
